Barbering Fact Sheet

Barbering is the practice of shaving or trimming the beard, cutting the hair, and giving facial and scalp massages with oils, creams, lotions, or other preparations, either by hand or using mechanical appliances.

Q: DO BARBERS NEED TO BE LICENSED?

A: Yes, California licenses barbers and requires them to work only in state-licensed salons or barbershops with a valid barber license posted at all times.

Q: WHAT ARE BARBERS TRAINED TO DO?

A: Barbers are trained in shampooing, hair styling, arranging, dressing, curling, waving, chemical waving, hair relaxing, hair coloring and tinting hair or applying hair tonics, and in applying cosmetic preparations, antiseptics powders, oils, clays, or lotions to the scalp, face or neck.

Q: HOW IS A BARBER DIFFERENT FROM A COSMETOLOGIST?

A: Cosmetologists, as well as barbers, may perform all services listed above. However, certain services, such as shaving, can only be performed by barbers.

Q: HOW OFTEN DO BARBERS HAVE TO CLEAN THEIR ELECTRIC CLIPPERS?

A: Like all other tools or equipment used on a client, electric clippers must be disinfected prior to each use. This includes detachable blades.
