Esthetics Fact Sheet

Esthetics is the practice of giving facials, applying makeup, eyelash application, hair removal (by tweezing or waxing), and providing skin care. It also includes beautifying the face, neck, arms, or upper part of the human body (from the shoulders and up) by use of cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, tonics, lotions, or creams.

Q: DO ESTHETICIANS NEED TO BE LICENSED?

A: Yes, California licenses estheticians and requires them to work only in state-licensed salons with a valid esthetician license posted at all times.

Q: CAN ESTHETICIANS TINT EYEBROWS AND EYELASHES?

A: NO, only licensed cosmetologists are trained and permitted to tint eyebrows and eyelashes.

Q: DOES A PERSON DEMONSTRATING, RECOMMENDING OR SELLING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS NEED TO BE LICENSED?

A: No, if a person is not charging nor receiving compensation from clients for the application of products, s/he does not need to be licensed.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME SERVICES THAT ESTHETICIANS CANNOT PROVIDE?

A: Some services that estheticians cannot provide are:

  1. Skin Piercing
  2. Laser Treatments
  3. Administration of Medication(s) for Any Reason
  4. Removal of Moles, Skin Tags, etc.
